About Blue Point (Rocket Rat's Goodbye)
Making our way to the beach on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, we passed a sign on the highway: The Blue Point. In a few miles, two lines and a melody were going through my head. A nice start but where will it go from here? I wasn’t in the mood for the “blues."
So, as I began to write the song, I thought of images we have seen of the Earth from space, such as “The Pale Blue Dot,” “The Blue Marble,” and “Earthrise.” They are powerful reminders of our place–our tiny, fragile, precious, blue place–in the universe.
So those first lines now led somewhere else. The “me” isn’t me, but it's Mother Earth looking back at her relationship with humankind. What does she have to say about our journey together and plans to one day “do without” her?
There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.”
